Terada: [Has half-unpacked his things, sitting on the floor beside duffle bag reading a book. Tennis bag, transfer papers, and more books are on the bed.]
Takayama: [ Kouji checks the room number against the paper he's been given with his schedule and transfer information. It's the right one, so he opens the door. There's a young kid sitting on the floor of the dorm room -- probably a first year, he thinks, and wonders why the hell he has to get stuck with a first year. Oh well. He drops one of his bags on the apparently unclaimed bed. ] Hey.
Terada: [Looks up upon hearing the door open to see a dark-haired boy come in and drop his bags on the other bed.] Oh! Hi. [Gets up.] I guess you're my roommate?
Takayama: Guess so. Takayama Kouji. [ opens the bag he'd just deposited on the bed and starts unpacking clothes, stuffing them unceremoniously into the provided chest of drawers ]
Terada: [Blinks a little at his new roommate's brusqueness.] Um... Terada Ayato. Hajimemashite. [Marks place in book and sets it on the bed, sitting next to it.] Are you a transfer student too? I wasn't sure who they were going to room me with.
Takayama: Yeah. Second-year. (Huh. If he's a transfer student then he can't be a first year.) [ He finishes unpacking that bag and stuffs the duffel into his closet, then sits at his desk and turns on the computer. ] You know what kinda connection we get here?
Terada: Not specifically, but I was online earlier and it looks like it's a LAN. Fast, anyway, which is all that matters, I guess. [Laughs a little.] So where are you from, then? I'm from Osaka... so you can just ignore me if I say anything that doesn't make sense. [Smiles a bit.] Third year.
Takayama: [ turns in his chair and blinks at the shorter boy, having trouble believing he's actually older ] Uh ... 'm from here in Tokyo, actually.
Terada: Oh, okay. That's cool. [Notices Kouji is staring, begins to feel a little nervous.] What?
Takayama: Uh ... nothing. Sempai.
Terada: ... Oh. [Grins a little nervously.] You don't really have to... do all that if we're in our room. It seems a little unnecessary.
Takayama: [ He relaxes a little in his chair. A knock sounds on the door twice before the door opens to reveal an older man carrying an assortment of bags. ]
Takayama-san: Hey, we've got you all signed in now -- here's the rest of your stuff. And this must be your new roommate! You're getting along okay, right? [ turns to Terada after depositing Kouji's bags on his side of the room ] He's talking to you, right?
Terada: [Slides off the bed and bows a bit.] ... Yes, he is. I'm Terada Ayato. Do you need any help with anything?
Takayama-san: No, I think we're okay for now -- that was the last of it. I'm Kouji's father, by the way, nice to meet you.
Make sure he talks, okay? And stays out of trouble.
Takayama: [ rolls his eyes ] Dad, don't be weird. [ sighs and starts unpacking the rest of his stuff -- there isn't much ]
Terada: Um.... of course. I will. [Smiles back at Takayama-san, then begins digging in his own duffle bag again. He produces a small stack of books, which he puts on the bookshelf near the desk and begins trying to arrange them. The bookshelf is already half-full.]
Takayama-san: Hey, kiddo, I'm gonna get going now. [ he ruffles Kouji's hair ] Be good, okay? And keep in touch, we want to hear how you're doing.
Takayama: [ flatly ] Sure thing, Dad.
Terada: [Can't help but smile a little grimly; his own parents have already been goe for nearly a month, and he came here by himself from Tokyo because his uncle was busy and wouldn't have been able to give him a ride for a few more days yet.]
Takayama: [ watches his father leave, and once he's gone, he goes back to unpacking; mutters ] Geez, you'd think they'd just leave me alone by now.
Takayama: [ shoves uniform shirts into drawers, not caring if they get wrinkled; tosses the bag into the closet, then searches through the bags for one in particular ]
Terada: It's not so bad. He was just helping you move in. [Ayato is amused by Kouji's method of putting away clothes, but says nothing. He finishes with the books and goes over to his tennis bag on the bed, checking it to see if there are any more stray novels in it - there are, and he takes two of the three and puts those on his shelf as well.]
Terada: If you do want help with anything, let me know. I'm just about done with my stuff.
Takayama: Nah, I'm good. [ notices Ayato's tennis bag ] ... You play?
Takayama: (Of course he plays, stupid, practically everyone here plays tennis. That's like ... what they're here for.)
Terada: Hm? [Notices Kouji eyeing his tennis bag.] Oh, yeah - that's mostly why I came here, really. [Flushes *just* a little.] My old school... wasn't very serious about tennis, really, but since my parents are out of the country for the year they let me transfer here to play.
Terada: You do, too?
Takayama: Yeah. My bag's around here. [ lifts it out from beneath another bag ]
Terada: Cool. [Grins.] Hopefully we'll both make the team. [He sounds a bit nervous, but hides it pretty well.] I should practice some more before tryouts, actually. If you ever want to play a practice game, let me know.
Terada: [Now that he's done unpacking his other things, Ayato reaches into his tennis bag and pulls out a small poster tube. He extracts a few posters from it: they're mostly anime (Gundam SEED and Naruto) but there's also a poster that looks like it came from a pro tennis magazine. He starts looking for the best place on the wall to put them.]
Terada: [Finishes putting up poster.] Well, since you're from Tokyo, do you know anything about the team here?
Takayama: [ shrugs, then sets his case against the wall ] Not really. Just that it's supposed to be at least halfway decent.
Terada: [Nods.] Hm. Yeah, that's pretty much all I know. No one at my old school was very serious about tennis.
Terada: Did you... come here to play? Or because your parents wanted you to transfer?
Takayama: [ looks at the wall ] They wanted me to transfer.
Terada: [Not sure if he should ask more.] Oh, okay. [Sits down on the bed.]
Terada: [Looks at the clock.] Well, speaking of, I think I'm going to go practice. I haven't found the courts yet, but I'm sure if I wander around enough I'll find them. [Shoves a novel into his tennis bag and shoulders it.] I guess I'll see you later, then?
Takayama: [ perks up a little ] You need someone to play with?
Terada: [Smiles a little.] I guess so. If you want to - I was just gonna play the wall otherwise.
Takayama: [ grumbling a little ] well, that's no fun.
Takayama: I'm pretty sure they're out back.
Terada: Hm. Okay. Well, yeah, I'd love to play you if you don't mind.
Takayama: [ grabs his own bag from against the wall and heads out of the dorm room ]
Terada: [Takes that as a "yes" and follows.]
